RAID is short for 'Redundant Array of Independent Disks'. Simply put, it uses two or more hard disks in combination for higher performance and also fault tolerance.
We offer either RAID 1 or RAID 5 as an extra on all but our most basic entry-level server builds.
RAID 1
This doubles data access speeds, although data writing speeds are not improved. Also includes disk mirroring for greater fault tolerance. We offer RAID 1 as an option on our IDE, S-ATA and SCSI servers.
RAID 5
Provides data striping
(spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disk drives)
at the byte level and also stripe error correction information. This not only results in excellent performance but also good fault tolerance; it is one of the most popular implementations of RAID and we offer it as an option on our S-ATA and SCSI servers.
